Jenna Felhoelter realized her life's dream of owning her own hair salon when she opened the doors to her new business July 6.

After working locally in the industry for only a year and a half, Fellholter, 22, said she "hit the ground running" when embarking on her new venture.

"It was a dream of mine. Something I've always wanted to do," she said. "I've always wanted to be my own boss and always wanted to have my own business doing hair."

In May, Fellhoelter, with the help of family, the design team at Kitchen and Bath Design, and McIntyre Plumbing, began turning J Studio and Salon at 112 W. 11th into a space she envisioned to be an environment inviting to both men and women.

Interior designer Joslyn Brungardt, working with the historic nature of the Chestnut Street District property, added design elements that accentuated its original decorative ceiling and wood floors.

"It's exactly what I wanted," Felhoelter said. "I wanted a comfortable feel, and Joslyn did great."

J Studio and Salon carries TIGI products, including Rockaholic and Catwalk as well as MoroccanOil and It's a 10 hair products. Also available are Hempz moisturizers, OPI nail polish, TIGI makeup and Magnabilities, a line of interchangeable magnetic pendants.

So far, the best thing about her new business has been her clients, Felhoelter said.

"They love it, and it's relaxing and fun," she said. "When somebody leaves with a smile, I love that."

Felhoelter said she finds her chosen profession to be rewarding and is grateful to be able to help her clients "feel better about themselves, and give them a little lift."

"Something little can make a big difference," she said. "I like that."

Felhoelter is joined by stylists Matt Becker and Mackenzi Maska. Together they offer a full line of salon services including manicures and pedicures.

J Studio and Salon's hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays.
