KU may raise admission standards

LAWRENCE (AP) -- Officials at the University of Kansas are considering tougher admission standards, saying that many incoming freshmen aren't ready for the rigors of college.
A new state law lets the Kansas Board of Regents adopt different admission standards for the state's leading universities.
No specific changes have been proposed and the new law requires that tougher standards can't go into effect for four years to give high school students time to adjust.
But KU officials were among those pushing for the new law. They note that 20 percent of freshmen drop out after their first year.
They say the current standards, adopted into state law in 1996, are too lenient and should also measure the student's ability to use resources, make goals and find mentors.
