Fifth Day of Service will be Sunday

Special to The Hays Daily News

In its fifth year, the annual Jana Mackey Day of Service, set for Sunday, will bring community members and Fort Hays State University students and staff together to honor the life of a women's rights advocate.

Service projects are scheduled from 1 to 4 p.m. at Chuck's Place in Wiest Hall on the FHSU campus.

Volunteers will package supplies for the Hays Community Assistance Center, create educational posters about the Circle of Six phone app designed to reduce dating violence, distribute community flyers about events on and off campus, work on a service project for CASA and participate in a social media campaign to thank some congressional representatives for their votes to pass the Violence Against Women Act.

Mackey grew up in Hays and graduated from Hays High School in 2000. Police believe she was killed as a result of domestic violence in 2008. She had just finished her first year of law school at the University of Kansas.
