Administrators this morning introduced Tisa Mason as the new vice president for student affairs at Fort Hays State University.

The post is one of the three top positions in the university's administration below the president. Mason said she accepted the appointment because she was impressed by Fort Hays' commitment to innovation and to student welfare.

"What really attracted me was the combination of the traditional college student experience and the progressiveness and virtual thinking," Mason said. "I did think there was a commitment to student success."

Mason serves in a similar role, as dean of student life at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. She has been in that position since 2004. Prior to that, she also worked as an adjunct professor at Indiana University- Indianapolis, and as executive director of Sigma Kappa Sorority and Foundation.

"Dr. Mason has extensive student-affairs experience in a variety of capacities, so I know she will make an immediate impact," university President Edward H. Hammond said.

Mason will replace Herb Songer, who has been vice president for student affairs since 1995. Songer is retiring at the end of June.

Mason has a bachelor of arts degree from Transylvania University in Lexington, Ky. She received a master's degree in education from Eastern Illinois University. She has doctorate in education from the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Va.
