Shubert named Hays postmaster

Donnie Shubert on Tuesday was named Hays' new postmaster, effective March 9.
Shubert, 41, has been working at the Hays office for four years and has been filling in as the officer in charge for the past six months.
That marked Shubert's second stint as OIC of the Hays post office, his first coming when longtime postmaster Tom Lippert retired last summer.
Bob Mikulecky was named postmaster late last fall but was on the job only about a month before being promoted to take over the top position in Manhattan.
Shubert again served as OIC before being given the head job Tuesday over three other finalists. He had transferred to Hays in 2009 after working as a mail carrier in WaKeeney since 1998.
Shubert and his wife, Kathryn, live on a farm west of WaKeeney along with their five children, ages 2 to 12 years.
But he said he doesn't mind the daily 35-mile commute.
"It gives me time to think (in the morning) and time to unwind on the way home," he said. "And the Hays office has a lot of great people. It's a great place to work. ... Really glad to be here."
