La Crosse Police Chief Leroy Penka will retire Wednesday after more than 30 years in law enforcement.

He will be missed, according to Rush County Sheriff Ward Corsair, but he still will be around.

"We're going to see him a lot still," Corsair said. "He'll be up for coffee or something."

Corsair started out as a police officer working for Penka in 1998.

"We're going to miss him ... but he needs to go do things that he wants to do," Corsair said.

Jason Reece, a current member of the city's force, will take over for Penka on Thursday.
