When the U.S. economy took a hit, shelter house coordinator Jackie Gray said Options: Domestic Sexual and Violence Services felt it.
Options is a nonprofit organization providing relief services to those affected by domestic and sexual violence.
Gray said many grants have been lessened or cut from the budget during the past few years, so when a group from Fort Hays State University's Leadership 310 class approached Options last year about raising funds for the organization, she was ecstatic.
"It is very helpful, especially this year," Gray said. "It helps to be able to purchase these supplies with these donations, so money can be spent other places."
This year, a group will be taking over that project and expanding upon it.
The group will disperse monetary and supply donation boxes throughout the community, which will be displayed today and collected Dec. 12.
Group member Anna Weber said they are looking for items used for everyday needs, such as toiletries and nonperishable foods.
"We saw a need in the community for it," Weber said. "A group did it last year, and we wanted to build upon that, raise more awareness and expand the project even more."
The group also partnered with the FHSU athletic department to raise awareness for Options at two events.
The group will give a short presentation at halftime of the basketball game against Central Christian College on Nov. 18 at Gross Memorial Coliseum. For the basketball game against Sterling College on Nov. 26, fans who bring a canned good will receive a $2 discount on admission.
Gray said any support is appreciated.
"Anything that your house needs to run, we have a shelter house that needs it, times five," Gray said.
