PLAINVILLE -- Conversation, entertainment and food are three staples of the holiday season. They're also the three things Jeanie Bellerive most enjoys each year during Plainville USD 270's holiday dinner for senior citizens.

"I don't think I've missed one," Bellerive said.

The holiday dinner began in 2000, according to Superintendent Beth Reust, as a way for students in the school district to give back to the community.

"The people here make you feel really special," Bellerive said.

Students from Plainville High School's National Honor Society, FFA, and Family, Career and Community Leaders of America helped set up the Plainville Elementary School cafeteria and serve the meal. FFA members also helped escort seniors from their cars into the building.

"It's just nice to be able to say 'thank you,' " said Kendra Husmann, PHS senior and NHS president.

Husmann and about a dozen other high school students served turkey dinners to the approximately 60 seniors who attended Wednesday's event. After eating, they were treated to a variety of holiday music selections performed by vocal music and band students in Plainville schools.

"I enjoy their programs. They always have a wonderful program," Eleanor Becker said.

Becker and her husband, Alfred, said they've attended the dinner for most, if not, all of the 10 years the district has offered it. Eleanor Becker said she enjoys getting out to see everyone who comes to the dinner.

"It's something small that we can help with, and I think they really enjoy it," said Brianne Plante, PHS senior and FCCLA president. "I think it's something a lot of people look forward to during the Christmas season."

Even though the Beckers don't know many children in Plainville schools now that their grandchildren have graduated, they said they still enjoy seeing what the students have to offer.

"I think we've always come," Alfred Becker said. "And we've always enjoyed it."
