A St. Francis man is in custody in the Sherman County jail in Goodland following a pursuit by law enforcement officials through two northwestern Kansas counties Sunday.
Sherman County Sheriff Burton Pianalto said his office received a report early in the afternoon from the Atwood Police Department of a stolen car from an Atwood residence.
Pianalto said a deputy patrolling Sherman County spotted the vehicle, a 2008 Dodge Charger being driven by 35-year-old Floyd Clifford Coates Jr., and called for assistance.
Coates turned onto a country road, and when he realized he was surrounded by police vehicles approximately 4 miles north of Sharon Springs, he turned into a wheat field, hit a ditch and came to a stop several hundred feet ahead.
According to a report from the Kansas Highway Patrol, Coates was transported to Goodland Regional Medical Center for treatment of possible injuries. He was wearing a seat belt.
Pianalto said Coates later was transported to the Sherman County jail. Pianalto said Coates also still is being treated for a medical condition.
