Quinter wins first-round game in 1A

The Quinter boys’ basketball team held on for a 63-55 first-round win at the Class 1A state championships Tuesday afternoon at Gross Memorial Coliseum in Hays.

The Bulldogs (26-0) led by as many as 19 in the first half and watched as Pretty Prairie (21-5) closed to within four points late in the fourth quarter.

Senior Zach Nemechek led Quinter, last year’s runner-up, with 20 points and eight rebounds. Senior Scott Ochs added 14 points, and seniors Brady Reed and Matt Bird also scored in double figures with 12 and 11 respectively.

Junior Hunter Pittman led Pretty Prairie with 21 points, and senior Joseph Lampe had 12 points and 15 rebounds.

Quinter will play Montezuma-South Gray in a 4:45 p.m. semifinal Thursday. South Gray (25-1) beat Macksville (22-4) in other first-round action, 54-45
