Following a Monday bond hearing, three Colorado men remain in jail after their arrest Friday on allegations they were involved in the rape of one woman and sexual battery of another.
Bond was set at $100,000 each for Dominique Allen, 21; Denzel Black, 21; and David Draper, 22, all of Aurora, Colo., who were arrested after a daylong investigation that began when police responded to a hang-up call to 911 at around 3:30 a.m. Friday morning.
Police are still searching for a fourth male suspect.
The call was traced to an apartment complex in the 700 block of West 12th, where the victims were found. The four suspects were not at the scene when police arrived.
Assistant Hays Police Chief Phil Hartsfield said the 20-year old rape victim is from Hays, but is not a resident of the city.
According to Hartsfield, the victim told police she knew three of her alleged attackers but was unfamiliar with the fourth suspect.
Those three men, whom the victim identified as Allen, Black and Draper, are former Fort Hays State University football players.
FHSU Athletic Director Curtis Hammeke told The Hays Daily News the men are no longer with the program. Allen and Draper, he said, were dismissed from the team in November, while Black has exhausted his eligibility to play.
HPD Lt. Don Scheibler said the department is aware of the identity of the fourth suspect, but said he has not yet been apprehended.
Scheibler said the rape victim reported having an iPod Shuffle portable music player and other property stolen from her by the suspects. It has since been recovered following the execution of a search warrant at the apartment, where marijuana and "items commonly used in the distribution of marijuana" also were found, he said.
Bed sheets and other possible pieces of forensic evidence have been sent to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation for testing, Hartsfield said.
Charges in the case are due by Friday, but County Attorney Tom Drees said he could not speculate on what possible charges might arise.
