Brownback appoints Rooks sheriff

STOCKTON -- Gov. Sam Brownback has appointed Chad Sterling as Rooks County sheriff, filling the unexpired term of Randy Axelson.

Sterling, who served as Axelson's undersheriff, was selected by Rooks County Republicans, who forwarded his name on to Brownback for the appointment.

Axelson, 43, resigned at the end of May. He faces nine felony counts of methamphetamine distribution. He remains free on $45,000 bond.

Neither Gary Knight or Blaine Dryden, who filed for election as the Rooks County sheriff, asked to replace Axelson.
