Groundbreaking ceremony set for new runway
A groundbreaking ceremony at 5:15 p.m. Monday will signal the launch of a major runway reconstruction project at Hays Regional Airport.
"We think it's going to be a great improvement to the area," said I.D. Creech, city of Hays public works director. "It certainly is nice to have funds available from the FAA and to be able to do this upgrade on our major runway."
No changes to Great Lakes Airlines flight schedules is anticipated throughout the construction process, Creech said. Aircraft will use the short main runway during construction of the intersection, after which the crosswind runway will be used.
The project to reconstruct runway 16-24 was delayed since last summer due to a holdup in the grant approval process by the Federal Aviation Administration. Bid at $6.8 million by Smoky Hill LLC, the FAA awarded a grant for 90 percent of the runway reconstruction.
