Hays native Ryan Pfeifer has received this year's dean's scholarship to attend dental school at Creighton University in Omaha, Neb.
Pfeifer, a 2005 graduate of Thomas More Prep-Marian, graduated from Creighton with a bachelor's degree in bio-chemistry in May.
Only one dean's scholarship is awarded each year, and Pfeifer will use his scholarship for 50 percent tuition reduction to continue his schooling at the Creighton University School of Dentistry, with plans to graduate in four years.
The dean's scholarship is awarded by the admission committee to an incoming first-year student who attended Creighton University for his or her undergraduate education and is based on academic excellence, dental admission test scores and extracurricular and service activity.
TMP to host tailgate picnic
Thomas More Prep-Marian will kick off the 2010 football season Friday with a tailgate picnic at Fort Hays State University's Lewis Field Stadium.
The hamburger-hotdog feed will begin at 5 p.m. on the east side of the stadium. There is no charge; however, a freewill offering will be accepted.
The Monarchs will open the season vs. Kinsley beginning at 7:30 p.m.
NWKTC students restore car
Students from Northwest Kansas Technical College in Goodland won the first-place trophy in the "best potential" category at the Hays Rock-Roll-Ride Rod Run last month in Hays.
Students have been working on a 1967 Chevrolet Chevelle SS since 2007, completing the rebuilding the 30-year-old car.
The students in the automobile technology program rebuilt the engine, transmission, suspension and rear differential. The class boosted the original 396 block engine to a 454.
Students in the collision repair classes restored the frame, stripping and sandblasting it before painting and trimming.
