HHS Chamber Singers open year by taking to the road
By DIANE GASPER-O'BRIEN
The Hays High School Chamber Singers will begin a busy second semester with a road trip.
The 24-member performing group will travel to Kansas City, Mo., this weekend to take part in a Martin Luther King Jr. concert at Grace and Holy Trinity Cathedral, an Episcopal parish in downtown Kansas City.
The concert is scheduled for 7 p.m. Sunday, when the Chamber Singers will sing several pieces, then perform a few numbers along with the Staley (Mo.) High School choir.
Johnny Matlock, Hays High choral director, is friends with Tracy Resseguie, choral director at Staley who has taken his choirs to perform throughout the country and to other countries as well.
Last year, Resseguie took his choir to Aspen, Colo., and made a stop en route to Colorado to perform in Hays with the Chamber Singers at First United Methodist Church.
Last summer, Matlock and Resseguie talked about where to meet to perform together this year, and Resseguie extended an invitation to the Hays group to come to Kansas City.
Along the way, the Chamber Singers will perform at First Presbyterian Church in Lawrence, where Resseguie is choir director.
The group's accompanist, Lexi Robinson, will make the trip, as will several parents of the HHS students.
Matlock's select vocal and performance group has a full slate of events for which to prepare when it returns home. So he said he is glad he can treat the students to a trip of this kind.
The cathedral, located near the Convention Center, was built in the late 1880s and consecrated about 10 years later. The transitional Norman style building was designed similar to the architecture of European churches.
"It's a wonderful, gorgeous church right by the Convention Center, and they have a lot of concerts there," Matlock said. "I'm excited for my kids to get to sing there."

TMP scholars bowl 2nd at Oakley tournament
Even without its senior leader, the Thomas More Prep-Marian High School scholars bowl team fared well Monday afternoon.
Competing without Ross Werth, the only senior on the team who had another commitment, the Monarchs went 5-1 at the Oakley Invitational to place second behind unbeaten Leoti.
Oakley was third with a 4-2 mark.
Also competing at the varsity level were teams from Dighton, Quinter, Rexford-Golden Plains and Winona-Triplains.
TMP also competed in the junior varsity division, where it finished in a four-way tie for first with a 4-2 mark.
Next action for TMP (31-9 on the season) will be Tuesday at Phillipsburg.
