Special to The Hays Daily News

The Society of Friends of Historic Fort Hays will be hosting its annual meeting at 2 p.m. Jan. 29 at Fort Hays visitor's center, 1472 U.S. Alternate Highway 183.

The meeting date is significant because it is the 151st anniversary of Kansas statehood, and 2012 marks the 25th year of the Society of Friends.

Jim Gray of Ellsworth will present "Kansas Cattle Towns," a program offered through the Kansas Humanities Speakers Bureau, at the beginning of the meeting.

Gray will talk about how Texas longhorn cattle, cowboys, gamblers, gunslingers and women combined to produce the archetypal Kansas cattle town and how different misconceptions have developed that distort the history of the towns, according to the Speakers Bureau. The public is invited to attend.

A Kansas birthday cake will be provided with refreshments, and following that, the Society of Friends will have their business meeting.
