TOPEKA (AP) — Motorists in Kansas face some new rules of the road Wednesday as a pair of highway safety laws take effect.

One law applies only to multi-lane highways outside the limits of any city. If the highway has at least two lanes in each direction, drivers may use the far left lane only to pass another vehicle, prepare for a left turn or make room an emergency vehicle.

The other new law applies to drivers of vehicles transporting non-hazardous materials. If they’re involved in a non-injury accident, they’re to move to the shoulder or the nearest exit.

The Kansas Highway Patrol notes that for a year, violating either new law will result in a warning ticket. On July 1, 2010, motorists will face a $60 fine.

Your scenario is not logical. This law applies outside the city limits where all lanes are rarely being used, except when necessary like in rush hour traffic. So, shall we extend the drive time of every vehicle since everyone has to drive in a single lane, use more gas, create more traffic jams where accidents are more apt to happen. Yep...this will certainly make things better and safer for us all. This is strictly about revenue and one more way to write tickets and collect money.Let's get our police force out of the city to monitor this while crime continues to escalate inside the city.

This is the most ridiculous law I have ever heard of...lets spend millions of dollars building multi lane roads and then limit their use to specialized situations...why not make all black cars drive in the middle lane, all red cars drive in the far left lane and all other cars get to drive in the far right lane. Then adopt a law that only allows you to change lanes once every 10 miles...then lets spend millions of dollars on a sallelite tracking system that will monitor all the activity and automatically send every violator a $100 ticket per occurance...I expect more from my elected officials than this nonsence!!

Hey you are in a car accident, and guess what, the ambulance can't get to you and your loved one because you have everyone crammed into the left lane as well as other lanes and oh guess what...your loved one passed away before they could get there..sorry, maybe next time! It's not about making money its about being safe and being able for emergency crews to get there and do their jobs..

Hey we are the state and we are broke... WE are going to make new traffic laws, cause we know people won't be aware and we'll write these stupid tickets to pay our budget deficit for this upcoming year!
