Fort Hays Post No. 9076 Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars has been earning trophies and awards throughout the past several months.
Auxiliary members received 20 awards, including second place at the national convention in Reno in July for a poppy display. The honor marks the first time the Hays post has placed in its national competition.
Local member Thea Boeckner received first place at the state level for her poppy display.
As she discussed the recent 2011-12 awards, VFW Auxiliary President Florence Wear smiled.
"I'm kind of proud of them," she said. "It's never been done in Hays, to receive that many awards in one year. Everybody's just ecstatic."
The auxiliary has more than 400 members, but Wear said approximately 15 of those members are "very active."
The group's poppy display, decorated as a promotional display, highlights poppy distribution of the auxiliary organization.
Proceeds from the group's poppy distribution go to Veterans Administration hospitals. Upcoming competitions for the local auxiliary include a tighty-whitey contest. Contributions of large packaged white undergarments to be donated to VA hospital patients will be accepted in a donation box at the Hays VFW Hall entrance, 2106 Vine, throughout October.
Auxiliary members also are looking forward to moving ahead with a local raffle sale and competition for Breast Cancer Awareness in October.
"We stay busy," Wear said. "I have a good group of ladies."
