As Friday's Oktoberfest celebration nears, efforts have been under way to connect visitors to the history, photos and upcoming events of the Volga-German settlements surrounding the Hays community.

Ruben Schuckman, tourism and marketing manager for Hays Convention and Visitors Bureau, has been working to update a clearinghouse site, which connects users to local Volga-German resources.

The site, germancapitalofkansas.com, has been evolving since its creation as the online information source for Midwest Deutsche Oktoberfest, an event discontinued in 2011.

"It's still an ongoing work in progress," Schuckman said of the website.

The site chronicles events such as church festivals and community dinners, and has links to other historical information sites and the Kansas Sampler Foundation's getrural.com website.

"In the last year, there's been an emphasis on trying to get all the little towns website exposure through those avenues," Schuckman said. "And that's great for Ellis County in general."
