DERBY — The Hays Larks dropped a close Game 2 in their three-game series with the Derby Twins on Saturday night.
Derby broke a 6-6 tie in the seventh inning on a two-run home run off Larks reliever Ian Bentley, then held on for an 8-6 win.
The loss drops league-leading Hays to 15-3 overall and 11-3 in the Jayhawk League. Derby improved to 9-7, 7-7.
Bentley (1-1) gave up five hits in 2.2 innings of relief of starter Nick Goza, who went four innings and allowed six earned runs on 11 hits.
Derby put up 17 hits against the Larks' staff, the most Hays has allowed this season. Hays posted six runs on 11 hits.
Aaron Cornell led off the game with his fourth home run of the season. After hitting two in Friday's win for the Larks, Cornell homered in the first at-bat to give Hays a 1-0 lead. Derby, though, answered with three runs in the bottom of the first off Goza.
Then Hays' Cody Daily tied the game at four in the fourth inning with a two-run home run with two outs.
Derby again took the lead back in the bottom half. Hays rallied with a run in each of the fifth and sixth. The Larks scored on an error
in the fifth, then on an RBI single by Clayton Garland, before Derby homered in the seventh to put the game out of reach.
Cornell finished 3 for 4 with three runs scored, while Desmond Roberts also collected a pair of hits. Ty Gilmore also drove in a run.
The two teams are scheduled to close the series at 7 p.m. today in Derby. The Larks return home to face Dodge City on Tuesday.
