KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) -- A police report has confirmed that a school bus that killed a 9-year-old in Kansas City, Kan., veered off the road before hitting the child.

Patience Cary died in the accident March 4. A police report released Monday said the bus drove off the road to the right and struck the child.

The victim lived a block away from the intersection, which has no curbs or sidewalks.

The report also said Cary was dead by the time medics arrived, and that the bus was filled with students when the accident occurred.

Police said they were still investigating if the veering was the bus driver's fault or due to a bus mechanical error.

A spokesman for the Kansas City, Kan., School District said the bus driver has been suspended with pay until the investigation is complete.

It could be another week or two before the full report is released.
