FORT RILEY, Kan. (AP) -- A top general with the Army's 1st Infantry Division is preparing to discuss the effects of automatic federal budget cuts on Fort Riley.

Brig. Gen. Donald MacWillie scheduled a briefing for reporters Friday on steps being taken by the division and the northeast Kansas post to implement the reductions.

The automatic cuts took effect March 1 after the White House and Congress failed to reach agreement on federal spending.

Pentagon officials have said the reductions will mean furloughs of civilian employees one day a week for 22 weeks beginning sometime in April.

MacWillie was expected to explain how Fort Riley will absorb the cuts and how they will affect the readiness of its 18,000 soldiers.
