Fort Riley soldier dies in Afghanistan

FORT RILEY, Kan. (AP) -- A soldier from Fort Riley has died in Afghanistan.
The Army said Tuesday that 31-year-old Sgt. 1st Class Glenn Jacob Whetten of Mesa, Ariz., died March 12 outside a medical facility in Afghanistan. He was injured after the vehicle he was in struck an improvised explosive device near Kandahar.
Whetten was assigned as a military transition team member to the 1st Brigade, 1st Infantry Division. He had been stationed at Fort Riley since June 2009 and was deployed last October to Afghanistan.
He also served a tour of duty to Iraq from 2003 to 2004 and was deployed to Egypt for five months in 2001.
The Army says 172 Fort Riley service members to date have died in Iraq and Afghanistan.
