(MCT) Several health care providers have joined a local patient safety initiative to make Wichita the "safest place in the country to have surgery," according to a news release.
As part of the safety initiative, the providers have agreed that prior to all surgeries, a checklist of items will be completed by physicians and staff that include:
--Identifying the patient by name and birth date
--Stating the procedure
--Making sure marked incision sites are visible
Participating organizations are Cypress Surgery Center, Galichia Heart Hospital, Kansas Heart Hospital, Kansas Medical Center, Kansas Spine Hospital, Kansas Surgery and Recovery Center, Medical Society of Sedgwick County, Robert J. Dole V.A. Medical Center, Via Christi Regional Medical Center and Wesley Medical Center.
National studies published in the New England Journal of Medicine and by the American College of Surgeons have shown that implementing a checklist prior to surgery can reduce harm to patients.
