LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) -- An agency that provides legal assistance to low-income Kansans is closing its branch office in Lawrence.

Kansas Legal Service says it plans to shut the Lawrence office at the end of the year because of funding cuts.

KLS managing attorney Bethany Roberts told The Lawrence Journal-World (http://bit.ly/QvRKFm ) the agency's Topeka office will provide services to clients in Douglas and Jefferson counties.

Roberts says Kansas Legal Services lost contracts with the state to help move people from state assistance to federal assistance. Two of those contracts were worth a total of nearly $1 million.

KLS also closed a field office in Garden City last year because of a lack of funding.
