Man dies in house fire near Winfield

WINFIELD, Kan. (AP) -- Investigators are trying to determine what caused a fire that killed a man during the weekend.

Fire Capt. Dan McClaskey says Richard Schooley, who is thought to be in his 70s, died after being pulled from the burning home Sunday morning in Burden, about seven miles east of Winfield.

Schooley's wife and adult grandson were able to escape the fire. Schooley was a retired rancher.

McClasky said the fire likely started from a faulty extension cord attached to a space heater.
