WICHITA (MCT) — A man committed suicide by stepping in front of an oncoming train Saturday morning near Lincoln and Washington, police said.
Police think the man, in his mid-30s, was homeless and are trying to contact his family, said Wichita police Sgt. Brian Sigman.
Shortly before 8 a.m., police received a report of a pedestrian/train accident in the 800 block of East Lincoln, just west of Washington. Police found a man's body, and he was pronounced dead at 8:03 a.m. Based on witness statements, police think it was a suicide, Sigman said.
As the train was coming north, the man walked toward the tracks and appeared to intentionally step in front of the train, Sigman said. "The conductors did all they could to react." The train, going about 30 mph with 114 cars extending south almost to Mount Vernon, couldn't stop in time, he said.
The stoppage of the train on the tracks blocked traffic on Lincoln and Harry.
