Kan. man sentenced to life for raping 9-year-old

Eds: APNewsNow.

OLATHE, Kan. (AP) -- A 27-year-old Overland Park man has been sentenced to life in prison without possible parole for more than 50 years for sexually assaulting a 9-year-old girl.

Christopher Britt was convicted in June of raping a child under 14, aggravated criminal sodomy of a child under 14 and aggravated indecent liberties with a child under 14.

Johnson County District Judge James Franklin Davis sentenced Britt on Wednesday under the state's "Jessica's Law," which mandates harsher penalties for people who victimize children.

Davis ruled against a defense contention that the law was unconstitutional, saying that state legislatures have decided that "enough is enough" when it comes to preying on kids.
