Council bans hard liquor at Kansas St. frats
Eds: APNewsNow.
MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) -- Fraternities at Kansas State University have agreed to a ban on hard liquor beginning next year.
The ban was approved this week by the university's Intrafraternity Council. It takes effect Jan. 1, when beer will be the only alcoholic beverage allowed in the fraternities.
The council's vote was 15-7, with one fraternity abstaining.
Kansas State administrators had no role in the decision. The council and its members are self-governing.
Council president Brandon Harder says the rule was being considered before September's hospitalization of a freshman who drank a large amount of alcohol at an off-campus fraternity. The council placed that house on probation for two years.
