Salina Scouts help city in energy challenge

Eds: APNewsNow.

SALINA, Kan. (AP) -- Boy Scouts in Salina will be out this weekend trying to help neighbors save energy while competing against other Kansas communities in the "Take Charge Challenge."

The scouts will deliver weatherization kits that can help keep warm air in and cold air out. Kits include caulk to seal windows and energy-efficient light bulbs to replace old bulbs that are not.

A hardware store donated the items to the scouts, who are helping Salina compete with Quinter, Merriam, Mount Hope/Haven, Wellington and Kinsley.

The winning community gets a Wind for Schools turbine, solar panels or cash to complete a civic energy efficiency project.
