Former Topeka mayor denied teaching license

Eds: APNewsNow.

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) -- The Kansas State Board of Education has again rejected a former Topeka mayor's request for a teaching license.

Doug Wright served 10 months in prison after pleading guilty to stealing thousands of dollars from his aunt and the Topeka Lawyers Club. The 2003 convictions were expunged from his record earlier this year, and he has completed courses in education.

The board first rejected Wright's application for a teaching license in May. Wright sued, and a Shawnee County judge sent his request back to the board for reconsideration.

The board voted 6-4 Wednesday to uphold its previous decision.

Wright says he'll contact his lawyer soon to decide how to proceed.
