Topeka library becomes refuge for unemployed

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) -- The Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library is adding services for the unemployed who have been flocking there in growing numbers since the economy faltered.

After noticing a growing number of requests about a year ago for career-related materials, the library decided to fast-track a project to create a jobs and career area. The section includes books, computers and other job search aids.

A donations from the Capitol Federal Foundation and another from a private donor are helping the area expand.

The staff also created job search kits containing resources on writing a resume, interviewing and coping with unemployment.

Public services librarian Jeff Imparato says many of the people have lost their jobs through no fault of their own. He says the library is trying to provide them the opportunities they need.
