Economy pressures KU donations

Eds: APNewsNow; Will be led.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) -- University of Kansas officials are hoping the big donors who have been there in the past to help finance major campaigns for projects will continue to open their wallets.

But some of those deep pockets haven't been as fortunate during the national economic downturn, raising some uncertainty about future pledges.

Dana Anderson, a university graduate and financial supporter, has seen the value of his own net worth decline in recent years because of the economy. Anderson is vice chairman for The Macerich Co., a California-based owner of 72 malls in 23 states. He has watched his stock holdings drop from above $100 a share when he made the commitments to below $6 a share since then.
