Kan. teacher gets probation in student abuse case

Eds: APNewsNow.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. (AP) -- A south-central Kansas teacher accused of dragging a student across a floor has been sentenced to one year of probation.

Reno County District Judge Joe McCarville called the case "sad" Friday when he sentenced Amanda N. Caley. The 29-year-old faces an underlying six-month jail term should she violate terms of her probation.

Caley was working as a special education teacher at Partridge Grade School in January when an 11-year-old girl refused to move. Prosecutors said Caley grabbed the girl by her feet and dragged her about a dozen feet, causing severe rug burns.

Prosecutors dropped a count of felony child abuse and an alternative count of aggravated endangerment of a child under a plea agreement. Caley had no criminal record.
