Corrections department seeks to sanction attorney

Eds: APNewsNow; Will be led.

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) -- The Kansas Department of Corrections is seeking disciplinary action against an attorney who helped a reporter investigate illegal sexual relationships at a state prison for women.

The department has filed an ethics complaint with the Office of Disciplinary Administrator against attorney Keen Umbehr. It alleges that Umbehr misrepresented the occupation of Topeka Capital-Journal reporter Tim Carpenter when they visited the Topeka Correctional Facility in August.

Umbehr says he did not misrepresent Carpenter, and had no legal obligation to tell the prison of the reporter's occupation.

Tomari Quinn, managing editor of The Capital-Journal, said Carpenter didn't misrepresent himself when visiting the prison.
