Kan. woman gets life sentence for toddler's death

Eds: APNewsNow.

INDEPENDENCE, Kan. (AP) -- A southeast Kansas woman has been sentenced to life in prison for the death of her boyfriend's baby daughter.

Melissa Wells Coons of Coffeyville was sentenced Wednesday in Montgomery County District Court. She was ordered to spend life in prison for felony murder plus 55 months for child abuse.

Coons was convicted in October in the January 2008 death of 23-month-old Brooklyn Coons. The little girl was injured while in Melissa Coons' care and died three days later.

Melissa Coons and the baby's father, Randy Coons, married after the little girl's death but before charges were filed.
