Warring Kan. newspapers reach court settlement

Eds: APNewsNow. Will be led.

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) -- A 121-year-old newspaper in the southwest Kansas town of Liberal has settled a federal lawsuit against an upstart daily rival published by its former employees.

Documents filed Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Wichita indicate the two newspapers reached a settlement after two days of mediation talks. The terms were not disclosed.

Liberal Publishing Co. puts out the Southwest Times. The company sued Seward County Publishing, publisher Earl Watt and four other former Southwest Times employees who started the new High Plains Daily Leader in May 2008.

The papers planned to make an announcement in their Friday editions.
