Fort Leavenworth commander picked

Eds: APNewsNow.

FORT LEAVENWORTH, Kan. (AP) -- The commander of the Army's 25th Infantry Division has been nominated to be commanding general of Fort Leavenworth and the Combined Arms Center.

Maj. Gen. Robert Caslen Jr. has been commander of the Army division at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. The Pentagon announced Monday that President Barack Obama has nominated Caslen for Fort Leavenworth, with a promotion to the rank of lieutenant general.

Caslen will replace Lt. Gen. William Caldwell IV, who was named by Obama to lead the NATO training mission in Afghanistan.

Caslen was recently in command of U.S. operations in northern Iraq. The Senate must confirm his nomination and advance in rank.
