Kan. agency cancels youth home contract

Eds: APNewsNow.

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) -- The Kansas Juvenile Justice Authority is canceling a contract with a youth home in Atchison because of budget cuts.

The agency says the 38 young offenders now housed at the Youth Residential Center will be transferred to other facilities. Operations at the Atchison home will cease by end of December, saving the state about $102,000 in current budget year.

The cancellation results from budget cuts announced in November by Gov. Mark Parkinson.

Juvenile Justice Authority spokesman Bill Miskell said Monday the agency has sustained more than $10 million in budget cuts in recent years. A youth center in Beloit closed earlier because of the cuts.
