Kan. late on aid payments to school districts

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) -- Kansas is delaying $173 million in aid payments to school districts because of a cash crunch.
State budget director Duane Goossen (GOH'-suhn) confirmed Tuesday that the state didn't have enough cash in its main bank account to meet its obligations to its 295 school districts.
The state delayed $98 million worth of general aid payments due to the districts on Dec. 1. An additional $75 million, due on Dec. 15 for special education programs, will also be delayed.
Members of the State Board of Education were briefed on the situation at a meeting Tuesday.
Deputy Education Commissioner Dale Dennis says the state is working with a handful of school districts to make sure they can make their payrolls for the month.
