Three area teams will head to their respective state volleyball tournaments after collecting sub-state championships Saturday evening.
In Class 1A, Otis-Bison High School and Wheatland-Grinnell will be the No. 8 and No. 5 seeds, respectively, when pool play begins Friday at Emporia’s White Auditorium.
In Class 2A, Smith Center earned the No. 2 seed, and will play in Friday’s pool at Hays’ Gross Memorial Coliseum.
Otis-Bison enters the 1A field with a 28-12 mark after winning sub-state No. 2 at Ransom. The Cougars knocked off No. 1 seed Kensington-Thunder Ridge, 25-16, 27-25 to advance. In the other Ransom bracket, Wheatland-Grinnell advanced by knocking off second-seeded Victoria, 25-23, 25-20. The Thunderhawks own a 31-9 record. Victoria finished its season at 29-6.
First up for the Thunderhawks is a 10 a.m. game Friday with No. 4 seed Olpe. Otis-Bison, in the same pool, will open at 11 a.m. against top-seeded and unbeaten Centralia.
Smith Center, at 35-5, won the Class 2A Planville sub-state as the tourney’s top seed. The Lady Red took out Ellis, then fifth-seeded Plainville, and knocked off second-seeded Trego Community, 25-8, 25-16 to earn the state berth.
Smith Center opens pool play Friday morning with an 11 a.m. matchup against seventh-seeded Ellinwood.
In Class 3A, Beloit took top honors at the Phillipsburg sub-state, knocking out the second-seeded host. TMP-Marian lost to Phillipsburg in the first round.
