GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) -- Israeli shellfire killed at least four people Monday in northern Gaza, Palestinian health officials said, among them two young children and an elderly man.

Several other people were wounded, at least one critically, by shells fired from a tank at a house in the town of Beit Hanoun.

The Israeli military said there had been no tank fire in the area, but that aircraft attacked a group of armed men heading toward an army patrol in the vicinity, close to the Gaza-Israel border.

Beit Hanoun farmer Omar Abdel Nabi, said he was driving his tractor in a nearby field when two or three explosions shook the ground.

"People were screaming that a tank shell landed in the next street," he told The Associated Press. "I carried two people covered in blood out of a house."
