LIBERAL -- The Hays Larks turned three double plays, and it helped lead to a 9-5 road victory against the Liberal Bee Jays.

The three double plays included what manager Frank Leo called an "ESPN Web Gem" by Elvin Rodriguez to start a 6-4-3 double play.

The win puts the Larks (24-13 overall, 16-11 Jayhawk League) back in the league lead of the Jayhawk lead for the time being. Liberal dropped to 26-14 and 16-13 in league play and sits in a tie for third.

Hays starter Jose Gomez pitched 42βΡ3 innings Wednesday, allowing all five Liberal runs (all earned) before three Larks relievers (Matt Schmit, Vincent Littleman, and Michael Burchett) combined for 41βΡ3 innings of scoreless relief.

Hays, down 5-4 entering the seventh tied the game on an RBI groundout by Cody Gougler. Then, the Larks did their damage in the eighth, scoring four runs on five hits. Elvin Rodriguez drove in a pair of runs on a single, then Sean Wilson blasted a two-run home run to put the game out of reach for the Bee Jays.

MacKenzie Handel finished 3-for-4 for the Larks, and Cam Brown went 2-for-5 with a run scored and one drive in. Wilson ended the night with three RBIs.

Hays and Liberal play another 7 p.m. contest today in Liberal, then the Larks close out the road portion of their schedule with 7 p.m. game Thursday in Dodge City. Hays is first in the league and Haysville is second with Derby third and Liberal fourth.
