LIBERAL --  Picking up their first road victory of the season, the Hays Larks got the one up on Liberal, 6-4 on Wednesday at Brent Gould Field in Jayhawk League action.

Hays (5-6 overall, 2-5 Jayhawk) came back from 3-0 hole after the first inning to gain the victory, not allowing a Liberal run after the third inning.

Larks starter Andrew Heck (2-0) picked up the victory in 51βΡ3 innings, allowing all four Liberal runs (all earned) on nine hits and two walks. Calvin Lewis, Grant Gillespie and Kurt Wunderlich combined for a shutout in the remaining 32βΡ3 innings.

Codi Harshman singled in the sixth inning to score Rafael Valenzuela, breaking a 4-4 tie. Then in the seventh, Josh Garcia hit a solo home run to set the final margin. Garcia had three of the Larks' 16 hits. The 16 mark was the highest on the road this season for Hays, but the second most on the summer.

Garcia, the designated hitter (eighth in the order), finished 3-for-5 with two runs scored, matched by left-fielder Joe Huwer, who went 3-for-5, scored two runs and drove one in.

The Larks are now tied for fifth with Dodge City in the Jayhawk League standings. Liberal fell to 4-4 in league play and 6-6 overall.

In other league action, El Dorado picked up an 8-5 road win at Derby to secure first place in the league standings. El Dorado is 8-3 in league play and 9-3 overall, while Derby dropped to 5-4 overall, and 4-3 in league play.

The Larks are off until Saturday when they travel to Dodge City for 7 p.m. action. Liberal is at Dodge City tonight, while El Dorado heads to Grand Junction, Colo. for a four-game series.
