Special to The Hays Daily News

Habitat for Humanity's ReStore has a new manager.

Val Karl, who retired in 2010 after 26 years teaching special education in Hays USD 489, began her new duties earlier this year.

She joined Habitat for Humanity, an international Christian organization that builds decent, affordable housing for those in need, in 2010.

"I was retiring, and I needed to keep busy," Karl said of her reason for getting involved with Habitat.

Karl said her immediate goal is to raise enough money through ReStore to finish the Habitat home at 400 E. 17th.

"The ReStore is like a giant fundraiser where we don't have to constantly ask people for money," Karl said.

The ReStore is located on the south side of The Mall at Hays.

It's open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays and accepts used furniture, appliances, home decor items and building materials and re-sells them.

To arrange pickup of larger donated items, to volunteer or to search for particular items, call Karl at (785) 625-6613 or (785) 432-5030 or email her at mikeandvalkarl@gmail.com.
