Special to The Hays Daily News

Big Creek Quilt Guild first met in February 1988, when a group of quilters got together to discuss forming a guild.

This year, the guild will celebrate its 25th anniversary. During the years, the size of the group has varied. Currently, there are 15 members who meet monthly to share new ideas, helpful hints and new techniques that continue to stimulate an interest in quilting.

Historically, quilts and quilters have been associated with community service, and Big Creek Quilt Guild promotes that spirit of giving. The guild has donated to Fort Hays University, Hays Medical Center, Habitat for Humanity and other service groups.

For the last few years, the group has provided quilts at Christmas time for children in the state's foster care system. In lieu of exchanging Christmas gifts, members donate to the Community Assistance Center.

Beginning Tuesday, there will be a Big Creek Quilt Guild display at the Hays Public Library Gallery, which commemorates the group's 25th anniversary and National Quilting Day on Wednesday.

Big Creek Quilt Guild is open to anyone who shares an interest in the arts of needlework and quilting. The group meets on the second Thursday of each month at 7:30 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 29th and Hall.

For more information, pick up a brochure at the library display or call Belva Hauxwell at (785) 623-4230, Barb Coonrod at (785) 625-9019, or Peggy White in WaKeeney at (785) 743-5662.
