Red Cross: Blood collections falling short

This month, blood collections are starting to fall short due to cancellations resulting from flu outbreaks. Under most circumstances, cold and flu symptoms are not transmissible by blood unless the person is running a fever. However, as a precaution, the American Red Cross is encouraging everyone to do what they can to protect themselves this flu season.

All healthy, existing and potential donors are asked to make an appointment to donate blood in the coming days. Locally, donations can be made at the Hays Blood Center, 208 E. Eighth, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Friday, or from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday.

The Red Cross has many layers of safety in place -- including strict donor screening criteria -- to help protect the nation's blood supply. Donors who are feeling ill or suspect they might be coming down with the flu should consider rescheduling their appointment until they feel better.

The Red Cross relies solely on the generosity of the American public to help save lives through blood donations. Every two seconds, someone in America needs blood.

Call (800) 448-3543) or visit bloodisneeded.org to make an appointment today. Walk-ins are also welcome at this drive. All blood types are needed to ensure the Red Cross maintains an adequate blood supply. A blood donor card or driver's license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Donors must be in general good health, weigh at least 110 pounds and be at least 17 years old (16 in Kansas with completed Parental Consent Form). New height and weight restrictions apply to donors younger than 19. Visit bloodisneeded.org to learn more.
