HRC office hours

The HRC office hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, except for Wednesdays, when the office is open until 6 p.m. The HRC phone number is (785) 623-2650.

Fall/winter open gym hours

8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, Friday

8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday

9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday

1 to 5 p.m. Sunday

HRC programs take priority over open gym time. A gym schedule is updated weekly and is available each Friday in the office or on the Web page.

Upcoming events

Hot shot basketball competition

Participants have one minute to dribble from half-court to shoot from hotspots in any sequence. Each participant will be given two opportunities. Each division winner and runner-up will be given a T-shirt for top score. Also those participants that record the best score will receive a special prize. Entry deadline: Pre-registration is encouraged but participants may sign up the day of the event. Entry fee: free. Date: Jan. 24. Times and ages: 1 p.m., 9- and 10-year-olds; 1:50 p.m., 11- and 12-year-olds; 2:30 p.m., 13- and 14-year-olds- and 15- and 16-year-olds. Location: Recreation Center. Awards: T-shirts and a special prize.

Wednesday deadline

Start Smart for preschoolers

Start Smart sports development program is designed to help children (3 to 5 years) and their parents prepare for organized sports without the threat of competition or the fear of getting hurt. The program instructs parents and kids together on the proper technique for each of the basic motor skills (throwing, kicking, catching and hitting) necessary for sports participation. In this fun mini-camp, your child will learn the basic rules of soccer, T-ball and basketball in addition to learning to socialize with new friends. Key fundamentals will be taught through activities designed to introduce your child to each sport. Entry fee: $20. Date: Tuesdays and Thursdays, Feb. 2 to March 4. Ages/times: 3 years, 6 to 6:30 p.m.; 4 to 5 years, 6:45 to 7:15 p.m. Location: Recreation Center. Limitations: minimum five, maximum 20. Instructor: Kyle Emerson

Kids concoctions

Bring your child and learn how to make fun, easy snacks and crafts, all the while learning about science. These silly creations can be repeated at home as all the ingredients are common household items. Help your child explore and learn as they create their own concoction. Entry fee: $5. Date: Feb. 2. Times/ages: 10 to 10:45 a.m., 2 years with an adult; 11 to 11:45 a.m., 3 to 5 years. Location: Recreation Center. Limitations: minimum five, maximum 12.

Wine tasting

Would you like a glass of wine at a meal or do you want to purchase a bottle for that romantic evening by the fire, but you don't know the difference from one to another? Meet us after a long day to smell and taste the different wines. You will receive a sampling of five wines and a glass of your favorite wine along with cheese and sausage. Entry fee: $10. Date: Feb. 3. Times: 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Ages: 21 and older. Location: Coffee Rules, 1101 Elm Street. Limitations: minimum 10, maximum 25.

Spring coed volleyball league

The spring session will play on Monday evenings. Teams will be divided into recreational, intermediate and competitive leagues. It's a great way to exercise, meet people and have fun. Entry fee: $120 per team payable by team or sponsor. Date: Mondays starting Feb. 15. Ages: Teams Formed (16 and above). Location: Recreation Center.

* Longest tail feather contest -- all ages.

* Messy hands -- 2 to 5 years with an adult.

* Mom and son Valentine dance -- 3 to 9 years with an adult.

* Mom's morning out -- 3 to 5 years.

* Story time yoga -- 2 to 4 years (2-year-olds with an adult).

Group fitness schedule

Class schedules and descriptions can be seen online at www.haysrec.org. All classes are drop-in classes for $2 per class. Punch cards can be purchased at the HRC office for $20 for 12 punches.

* Low Impact -- 8:10 to 9 a.m. Mondays and Wednesdays.

* Step On Up -- 8:10 to 9 a.m. Fridays

* Cardio Max -- 5:30 to 6:20 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays.

* Thirty-minute power -- 12:15 to 12:45 p.m. Wednesdays.

* Zumba -- 6:35 to 7:25 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.

* Step Interval -- 4:30 to 5:20 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.

* Yoga -- 5:30 to 6:20 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.

* Light lunch -- 12:15 to 12:45 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.

* Cardio Combo -- 5:30 to 6:20 a.m. Fridays.

Senior fitness classes

All classes are drop to in classes and are $1 per session.

* Senior Sit and Be Fit, 1 to 1:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.
