HRC office hours

The HRC office hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, except for Wednesdays, when the office is open until 6 p.m. The HRC phone number is (785) 623-2650.

Fall/winter open gym hours

8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, Friday

8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday

9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday

1 to 5 p.m. Sunday

HRC programs take priority over open gym time. A gym schedule is updated weekly and is available each Friday in the office or on the Web page.

Upcoming events

Hays optimist club tri-star basketball contest

Come on out and put your basketball skills through this skills competition. Individuals will be tested on dribbling, passing and shooting skills.  Register the day of the event. Entry fee: Free. Date: March 13. Times: girls, 10 a.m.; boys, 11 a.m. Grades: second to seventh grades. Location: Recreation Center. Awards: All contestants receive a T-shirt, Plus awards to top three in each grade, and two special awards. Sponsors: Hays Optimist Club and HRC.

Wednesday deadline

Story time

Come and join us for a story and activity. We might paint, do a science experiment, play with dough or make a snack. Entry fee: free Date: March 8. Times: 9:30 to 10 a.m. Ages: 2 to 4 (2 with an adult). Location: Recreation Center. Limitations: minimum five, maximum 12.

 

Story time yoga

Telling the story as part of a yoga class and acting it out with yoga poses is a great way for children to use their imagination, which is sometimes lost in our lives. Each month we will read a story and finish with a yoga practice using the animals or object from the story. What a great way to introduce your child to both. Entry fee: $2. Date: March 8

Times: 10:15 to 11 a.m. Ages: 3 to 5.Location: Recreation Center. Limitations: minimum five, maximum 12.

 

Let's find out

Let your child find out about what goes on in our environment. As they learn about friends, pilgrims and Earth Day, they will also be taught five critical early reading skills: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. The kids will have so much fun they wouldn't know that they are learning. This class is once a month for nine months. Entry fee: $2 per class or $18 for nine. Date: Thursday. Time: 9 to 9:45 a.m. Ages: 3 to 5. Location: Recreation Center. Limitations: minimum five, maximum 10.

 

Handcrafted greeting cards

Make five handcrafted greeting cards during each class. Session three and four will focus on Easter, Mother's Day, birthday, get well, sympathy and thinking of you. Cards will be made using die cuts, punches, rubber stamp images, small pictures, cut outs, and small flowers. Cards will be embellished with brads, eyelets, ribbon, and glitter.  Please bring a pair of scissors to class. Entry fee: $6.50 per class. Date: March 9. Times: 7 to 9 p.m. Ages: 18 and older. Location: Recreation Center. Limitations: minimum five, maximum 16.

 

Snowball coed softball tournament

Dust off those softball mitts and bats and get your teams formed for the HRC - Snowball Coed softball tournament. Entry fee: $75. Date: March 13 and 14. Ages: teams formed, 16 and above. Location: Frank Stramel Softball Complex. Limitations: minimum four teams.

Class schedules and descriptions can be seen online at www.haysrec.org. All classes are drop-in classes for $2 per class. Punch cards can be purchased at the HRC office for $20 for 12 punches. * Low Impact -- 8:10 to 9 a.m. Mondays and Wednesdays.

* TRX training, 1 to 1:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays.

* Cardio Mix -- 5:30 to 6:20 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays.

* Light lunch -- 12:15 to 12:45 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.

* Step Interval -- 4:30 to 5:20 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.

* Yoga -- 5:30 to 6:20 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.

* Zumba -- 6:35 to 7:25 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.

* Thirty-minute power -- 12:15 to 12:45 p.m. Wednesdays.

* Cardio Combo -- 5:30 to 6:20 a.m. Fridays.

* Step On Up -- 8:10 to 9 a.m. Fridays

Senior fitness classes

All classes are drop to in classes and are $1 per session.

* Sit and Be Fit, 1 to 1:30 p.m. Tuesdays.

* Line dancing, 1 to 1:30 p.m. Wednesdays.

* Arthritis Foundation Sit and Be Fit, 1 to 1:30 p.m. Thursdays
