HRC office hours

The HRC office hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, except for Wednesdays, when the office is open until 6 p.m. The HRC phone number is (785) 623-2650.

Spring open gym hours

8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday

9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday

1 to 5 p.m. Sunday.

HRC programs take priority over open gym time. A gym schedule is updated weekly and is available each Friday in the office or on the Web page.

Upcoming events

Third annual backyard barbecue

Coming June 13. For $30, participants can enter one of both divisions. Open division for chicken, pork and beef. See Web page for specific rules. Top all around winner will get a Treager grill, provided by Crawford Supply. Second place all around winner gets $250. Top winnners in each category will receive a prize as well. In the people's choice division, ribs will be provided. Winner will receive $100.

HRC wellness fair

The HRC will be hosting a wellness fair for anyone interested in finding out more about wellness. Easy home exercises will be available, healthy information, health risk factors and ways to prevent things will be available to pick up in brochures or pamphlets. Entry: free. Date: Saturday. Time: 10 a.m. Location: Recreation Center.

Wednesday deadline

Adapted day camp

Campers in the adapted day camp will participate in many activities such as movies, bowling, crafts, miniature golf and many other summer time activities. The camps are open to Hays USD 489 special education cooperative students ages 7 to 21 only. This adapted day camp is not associated with USD 489. Direct questions to Gail Wickham, program director and instructor for the camp, at Hays Recreation Commission (785) 623-2650. The Hays Recreation Commission does not provide services of a personal nature including assistance in eating, toileting or dressing in any of its programs or activities. Persons who need services of a personal nature and who are participating in any programs or activities sponsored by the Hays Recreation Commission must provide his or her own personal assistant.

Entry fee: $25. Date: Monday to Thursday, June 22 to July 9. Times: 12 to 3 p.m. Lunch will not be served. Location: Recreation Center. Limitations: Maximum 25 per camp.

Messy hands

Kids, plan on getting "messy" with your hands as you participate in a variety of activities using paints, play dough, shaving cream and glue. Something different every time. Entry fee: $3

Date: Wednesday, June 17. Times: 7 to 7:45 p.m. Ages: 6 to 12. Location: Recreation Center. Limitation: minimum 5, maximum 12.

Three, two, one ...

Blast off

Come and learn what it takes to make a rocket fly. Susan Schlichting, Ellis County Extension agent for 4-H youth development, will have each of you build several rockets during the class. Rockets will be launched at the end of the day, weather permitting. Model rockets might be kept for display at the Ellis Country Fair, July 12 to 19. Entry fee: $7.50. Date: Thursday, June 18. Times: 1 to 5:30 p.m., Rocket launch at 5 p.m. Parents welcome. Ages: 8 to 10. Location: Recreation Center. Limitation: minimum 5, maximum 15

Dog agility

We are interested in offering this fun course for you and your dog. During this beginner obstacle course, your dog will be challenged to go under, over and through obstacles while on a leash. If this is a program you would be interested in, give the HRC a call at (785) 623-2650. Following this, we will set up an introduction meeting about the class and set up a class schedule. No choke collar will be used in this class. Please have your dog on a standard collar.

Arthritis foundation

exercise program

The program curriculum includes health education lesson plans on topics to help participants learn strategies to maintain a lifelong exercise program, manage pain, reduce stress and improve diet. Entry fee: $6. Date: Thursdays to June 11 to July 16. Time: 1 to 1:45 p.m. Ages: 55 and older. Location: Recreation Center. Limitations: minimum 5, maximum 20.

Brittish challenger

soccer camp

Register online at www.challengersports.com. Come join us for one of the most popular and exciting soccer camps around the area. Learn from experienced and knowledgeable instructors. All participants will receive a camp T-shirt and soccer ball. This camp will focus on challenging participants to improve their soccer skills with maximum participation. Entry fee: $95 (Family discount for second and third child: $5 off for second child, $10 off for third child). If you agree to house the coach, your fee will be waived for one child. Camp dates: June 22 to 26. Ages and Times: 5 to 9 from 9 a.m. to noon, 10 to 16 from 1 to 4 p.m. Location: Pratt-Optimist Soccer Complex.

Class schedules and descriptions can be seen online at www.haysrec.org. All classes are drop-in classes for $2 per class, punch cards can be purchased at the HRC office for $20 for 12 punches.

* Low impact, 8:15 to 9:15 a.m. Mondays and Wednesdays.

* Cardio max, 5:30 to 6:25 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays.

* Yoga, 5:30 to 6:25 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.

* Senior sit and be fit, 1 to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.
